When I was a child, my parents punished me by taking away my books. Perhaps, then, it was a foregone conclusion that I would be an English teacher. Sixteen years into the profession, I'm certain I made the right choice. My passion for literature and writing even dictates my vacations! For example, this summer in Prague, I insisted on a photo opportunity at the Franz Kafka statue. In North Carolina, the Thomas Wolfe house was a must. Last year in Rome, the entire tour group waited as I recited Marc Antony's speech at the Forum. This makes me a great teacher, but a tiresome travel companion (so I'm told).
I have always hoped that my love for reading and writing is contagious. More importantly, I truly strive to reach each student's heart, as well as his or her mind. While they are in my classroom (and even years later, as they roam the halls), my students are "my kids". The magnitude of this responsibility, not to mention the privelege of bearing it, weighs on me tremendously. In recent years, as I've listened to social criticism of teachers, some of which accuses us of being "brainwashers", I've shaken my head in disbelief. I don't want to override the beliefs of my students. No, my job is to help them define THEIR beliefs, to assist them in defending those beliefs through communication and research skills, through reading opportunities, through comparison of their beliefs to those of others. My job is to teach them HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Even more important than the answers, I believe, are the questions.
