Hello, my name is JoAnne Smith and I am thrilled to be the Librarian at Wolf Ranch Elementary! I have over 20 years of teaching experience in both public and private schools. This will be my 6th year as a librarian. Prior to that, I taught Pre-K through 3rd grade and volunteered with Jr. High and High School students in the church Youth group for over 10 years.
My goal is to provide a safe, positive learning environment where students can read, explore, and collaborate while using critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Another goal is to provide our patrons with books that reflect mirrors to see themselves, windows to see the experiences of others, and doors to the endless possibilities our world offers. Libraries are no longer quiet book repositories where students simply come to read and check out books. The library is alive and robust with active learners. Students will learn about digital citizenship, literacy, and research skills as well as work in cooperative groups in our Makerspace. I would love to see students extend their learning from their classroom into the library.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, crafting, relaxing, and spending time with my family and my precious dogs. Leia has earned 4 official American Kennel Club Titles: Canine Good Citizen, Novice, Intermediate & Advanced Tricks. Leia and I became an official certified Pet Therapy Team with the Dog Alliance in 2021. We have volunteered as a therapy team in libraries, an assisted living facility, and in a Summer Camp program where children learn how to interact with and take care of dogs. Last fall, Dewey joined our little family and has earned the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Puppy Title. He has completed intermediate and advanced obedience classes and is working towards his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen title with hopes of becoming a therapy dog too.
