• World History

    World History focuses on developing students’ abilities to think conceptually about world history from approximately 8000 BCE to the present and apply historical thinking skills as they learn about the past. Five themes of equal importance — focusing on the environment, cultures, state-building, economic systems, and social structures — provide areas of historical inquiry for investigation throughout the course. AP World History encompasses the history of the five major geographical regions of the globe: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania, with special focus on historical developments and processes that cross multiple regions.

    Course Content: The World History course is structured around themes and concepts in six different chronological periods from approximately 8000 BCE to the present: • Technological and Environmental Transformations (to c. 600 BCE) • Organization and Reorganization of Human Societies (c. 600 BCE to c. 600 CE) • Regional and Transregional Interactions (c. 600 CE to c. 1450) • Global Interactions (c. 1450 to c. 1750) • Industrialization and Global Integration (c. 1750 to c. 1900) • Accelerating Global Change and Realignments (c. 1900 to the Present) Within each period, key concepts organize and prioritize historical developments. Themes allow students to make connections and identify patterns and trends over time.
