Second Grade Curriculum

Reading
use reading strategies to improve fluency, comprehension, and reading skills in a variety of types of reading materials

Writing
plan and organization ideas in order to write for a variety of audiences and 
purposes
use appropriate spelling, punctuation, and capitalization

Handwriting
use correct forms of manuscript
print legibly
lower case cursive will be introduced in the spring

Mathematics
use a variety of problem solving strategies
recall addition and subtraction facts
use and understand two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping 
learn  multiplication concepts and facts, counting money, telling time, 
measurement, patterns, place value, and geometry

Science/Social Studies 
these subjects will be integrated into reading, writing, and math as well as taught through individual units units include citizenship, geography, historical events, economics, conservation, plants, animals, ecology, matter and energy, living things of long ago and the moon

Expectations for Learning in Second Grade
be confident, proficient readers and writers
demonstrate good citizenship through conflict resolution and appropriate social skills
problem solve in a variety of ways
be responsible learners
develop self-assessment strategies

Establishing Good Work Habits
complete and return homework promptly
read 15 to 30 minutes a day at home
return notes, folders, school materials and school communication on time
complete work in class
assume responsibility for their own behavior and personal belongings
follow directions, make good use of time, and participate appropriately
be able to work independently and cooperatively with peers

Expectations for Parents
check backpacks daily    
read information from school and teacher   
establish routines for homework (a place and time)    
discuss homework and class work with your child daily   
visit or volunteer at least once during the year      
take care of necessities such as lunch money, and transportation problems
