Past Classes:

Adventure Challenge:  Our Adventure Challenge class has been a favorite for students every year. Working along with a highly trained Georgetown Parks and Recreation Staff member you will discover your strengths by challenging yourself to explore many new skills such as: canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, caving and many more!  If you are looking for an adventure try the ASAP Adventure Challenge class!

Agents of Change:  I used to wonder why someone didn’t do something about “that”…. then I realized I was someone! (L. Tomlin).  In the spirit of change this class is designed to turn, turn, turn! Students will be engaged hands-on in ASAP program public relations, class curriculum design, and planning special program functions. These Agents of Change will be a ground-breaking group making ASAP a program for kids by kids!

Around the World in 14 Days!: Get ready for a whirlwind holiday right from the comfort of a classroom. Students will explore the cultures and languages of several countries in only 14 days! They will have the opportunity to learn conversational Spanish and explore the culture and food of South America as well as many other countries such as Italy, Germany and France. This is a vacation for your mind you wont want to miss!

Arts & Crafts:  Get out your hot glue gun and get ready to create a master piece! Students in this class will use many different mediums to create fun crafts they can take home and share with family! Everything from jewelry making to wood working and much more!

ASAP XGames:   This class puts the X in extreme! Dudes and Chicks in this class will get up and move! You will participate in exciting, high-energy games such as dodge ball competitions, football, soccer, 3-on-3 basketball, battle ball, kick boxing and much more!

AquaSAPers: The ASAP AquaSAPers will experience the full aquatic experience through this hands-on course. A well experienced Swimming Guide will take the students through water safety, swimming instruction, and aquatic exercise.

Baby Blue Crew: You have heard of the GHS Blue Crew – well this is the junior version. Be the behind-the- scenes crew by cheering on your peers at sports events and other competitions. Students in this class will attend student events FREE with a special Baby Blue Crew pass as well as learn school fight songs, cheers, chants, make locker/ run through signs and much more. For those of you who are not afraid to show your Eagle spirit, step on up and let us hear it!

Babysitters Club: This class is guaranteed to land you that summer babysitting gig you have been looking for. You will learn everything you need to know to work with little ones such as general care for kids, fun snacks, quick crafts to entertain, how to spread the word that you are for hire, and CPR certification!

Career Connections: Through the Career Connections class students will learn to answer the questions: Who am I?  Where do I want to go?  How do I get there?  Students learn about the 16 Career Clusters, employability skills, the basics of surviving in a professional environment and character skills.  Students will take aptitude tests that align them with their interests, learn to understand career opportunities, and complete their Texas Achievement Plan . **Students must be in 8th grade to enroll in this class**

Clubn’: Don’t see what you would like to do after school here? Ask an ASAP staff member how to submit a proposal for your own after school “club”. ASAP will help you to recruit members, find a sponsor, get t-shirts made, have a place to meet, and develop guidelines for your group! (Previous groups have included but are not limited to Dance Teams, STEP clubs, skateboarding groups, etc.) Use your imagination and design your own class!!!!

Computer Literacy:   This class puts the world computers at your finger tips.  With the increasing emphasis on computer skills in the world today this is a wonderful time to learn real life applications. Students will obtain skills in typing (keyboarding), web site design, creating a newsletter, internet information search engines and graphic art T-shirt design. 

Computer Web Design and PR:   This class takes the worlds of art and computers and combines them.  You will learn real life applications in the computer world such as: designing and maintaining a web site, creating a newsletter and graphic art T- shirt design.  If you are interested in computers or art come see how to merge the two to create skills for your future by promoting ASAP!

Cosmo: Get ready to Glam it up! These students will take the world of fashion from concept to catwalk! Cosmo will focus on the art of looking good. Students will research fashion trends. Learn from professionals the tricks of the trade in hair and make up. Design and create an ensemble- all leading up to a fashion show at the end of the semester.

Cultural Culinary Arts:  Explore through your sense of taste the tantalizing cultures of Japan, France, Egypt, India, Greece, and more.  Each class will be an adventure of the taste buds as you learn to create dishes native to these parts of the world. This class is not for the faint of heart.  Thrill seekers only need apply!  If you are interested in learning to cook, exploring other countries, or eating, sign up today.

Director’s Cut: For your extended viewing pleasure this hands on media appreciation class is sure to delight audiences of all ages. Students will watch movies, read books that are now movies and connect them to awesome hands on activities that incorporate art, acting, food and fun. This class is rated R for   out Rageous!

Fashion Design:  Students will take clothing from concept to a complete garment.  They will learn basic sewing skills from a simple stitch to using a pattern- making this an excellent class for not only novice but the most experienced of sewers.

Get-Involved ASAP!:  Take the Challenge Get-Involved ASAP! – Students in this class will create and accomplish (as a group) their own campus improvement and community service activities. This fun experience will show students how satisfying it is to give back to their community. 

Hang Time: This class is exactly that -time to sit, relax, talk with friends, go out-side, play basketball in the gym, dominoes, whatever!  Perfect for that teen who just wants to hang. This year’s hang time will include opportunities for the “Video Gamer” – students will explore games such as Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and much more.

Homework Lab:   Get your homework done with certified teachers and highly qualified staff.  After homework is done qualified teachers will help students to organize school materials and tutor them in areas where they have difficulty. Students must bring all needed work to this class.

Language Lab: Get ready for a whirlwind holiday right from the comfort of a classroom. Students will explore the cultures and languages of several countries including the exciting ENGLISH language. They will have the opportunity to learn conversational Spanish, explore the culture and food of many other countries such as Italy, Germany and France. They will make comparisons between these exciting languages and English. This is a vacation for your mind you wont want to miss!

Language Lab: Plug in your IPOD and prepare for a literary adventure. Students will explore a variety of self selected literature with IPOD in hand nestled against comfy bean bags and pillows. This class will have students reading along to books they have to read in class, literature they are interested in, and classics they may have never known about! This youthful way of approaching reading is sure to help students PLUG INTO their passion for literature.

Lego® My Robot: This cutting edge computer programming robotics course will blow your mind! Using the latest Lego Mindstorm® technology students will delve into math, science, and computer literacy in a way they could only imagine before.  Using graphic programming students will build and develop their own robot. In small cooperative groups they will train this robot to command their every whim! This class is sure to be an odyssey for the mind and an adventure for ALL! 

Let’s get Physical! This class is not a games class! Students in this class will be getting up and moving! Students will participate in an art form called Capoeira that combines martial arts, music and movement. Students will also get into motion with some high impact kick boxing and hip hop dance. With this 3 part program there is no way they will get bored!

Math Lab: This is high impact Math at its best! Students will participate each week in a  variety of math activities that challenge their problem solving skills,  work to reinforce skills needed for the TAKS Test , and help them to explore the fun and hands-on side of Mathematics!

Mathletics:  This is high impact  Math and Science at its best! Students will participate each week in a Math/ Science activity that challenges their problem solving skills and helps them to explore the fun and hands on side of Mathematics!  From exploding experiments to building  human holding bridges this class promises to pack a punch for any aspiring mathelete!

My>>Space: This Computer Web Design class is designed with teens in mind. You have heard of blogging, myspace, and IM- this class does it all. Through this class even the most experienced computer teen will learn real life applications in the computer world. If you are interested in computers come see how to safely learn how to use these exciting teen friendly computer applications to create skills for your future by promoting ASAP!

Myth Bustas’: Fire up your Bunsen burners! In this problem based class students will explore science in a completely different way. Students will solve their own scientific anomalies with carefully designed scientific experimentation. This class is designed to support the knowledge students need for the TAKS test while solving scientific mysteries AND having a GREAT time!! From exploding experiments to building human holding bridges this class promises to pack a punch for any aspiring scientist!

Pet Prep- Does your child think they are ready to handle the responsibility of a pet- OR would you like them to see how hard it is for you to take care of your family’s furry friend! Then this is the class to sign up for. In this intense 14 week class students will research pets, learn how to train animals and what find out what it takes to take care of a pet. This class will be jam packed with many furry friends and wet nosed visitors so that students can have the opportunity to work hands on with common and exotic animals.

Photography: Students in this class are sure to enjoy the process of capturing a moment in time forever! Precious moments and memories fly by and what better way to record them than through the art of photography. If you are interested in learning more about the brilliant art of photography, professional matting and framing, digital media editing, and much more you won’t want to miss this opportunity! Whether you are an accomplished photographer or just aspiring, you will find much to learn in this exciting class (NO supplies are necessary but you are more than welcome to bring your own camera).

Science Lab: Fire up your Bunsen burners! In this lab-style science class students will experiment with a variety of science activities. Scrap booking: Students will start by learning the basics of Scrap booking as the catalogue past ASAP pictures in a fun and creative way! They will have an opportunity through the course of this class to design their own scrapbook with pictures of friends, family, and learn basic photography principals as they take their own scrapbook pictures! 

SPAR: Let’s Get Ready To Rumble!!!   This is NOT a games class! Students in this class will be getting up and moving! Students will learn a combination of martial arts, kick boxing and traditional boxing. Students will get into motion while learning restraint, patience, physical fitness and self defense. With this 3 part program there is no way they will get bored!

Sports Exploration: Relieve your stress with some fun, recreational games.  This class will allow you to try out many different sports, games and physical fitness activities that you might not usually get the opportunity to try- such as; yoga, cone dodge ball, soccer, basketball and much more!

Study 101: This class will go beyond that of the homework and tutorials genre.  An excellent compliment to the homework help class it will teach students how to make projects more snazzy, notes more organized, and studying more effective! Remember it is never too early to be preparing study habits for college.

Teen Talk: This fun interactive class will address the latest social and emotional issues teens are facing today.  Research shows that in our growing society emotional intelligence is becoming increasingly important for success later in life. Building these skills now will enable students to become successful community members in the future!   The discussions will be student driven and will be worked through with games and  interactive “hands-on” activities to help students not only be aware but to learn application of this knowledge!

Tutoring and Homework Help:    This class goes beyond finishing your homework.  Qualified teachers will help  students to organize your school materials, make a study schedule, tutor them in areas where they have difficulty and teach them effective ways to take notes. Students will get a chance to finish homework with help from very qualified instructors. Students must bring all needed work to this class.

UIL: The University Interscholastic League was created by The University of Texas at Austin to provide leadership and guidance to public school debate and athletic teachers. Since 1909 the UIL has grown into the largest organization of its kind in the world. This class is sure to be an exciting opportunity for students to compete academically

Urban Invasion: Hip hop dance, slam poetry and graffiti art- this class brings the city into Georgetown! Students will learn to create these multiple styles of Urban art and experience the city culture through this  BALLER-IFIC class!

Youth Theatre Company: Be the voice of your peers by addressing the latest teen topics through theatre. With the help of The Theatre Action Project the students will create original performances addressing issues of healthy choices to perform in the Georgetown community. By joining this class you will learn theatre skills, work together as a team, tackle important youth issues and have tons of fun!
