Starting in the 1700s, Britain took over Nigeria looking for people to work their crops (cheap labor), spices for food, sugar and tobacco, and more land to colonize.  The people of Britain did not treat the people of Nigeria nicely. They worked them hard, made them slaves, and made them farm their sugar and tobacco. The British treated them with indirect rule which was the cheapest way to treat the Nigerians.

When Nigeria was colonized it hurt everyone in the country. Many civil wars broke out, there were revolutions all over, the military had too much power and ruled governments, some of the people were corrupt. The Nigerians didn’t have schools and most got sold to some wealthy men in Europe. Many Nigerians didn’t have medical care, so when someone was hurt they just worked through it until it either got better or it got infected and they could die.

In the year 1960 the Nigerians won their independence and became their own nation. After many civil wars, revolutions resulted in independent groups the had to help Britain in WW II by supplying raw materials. Some British soldiers thought they deserved more and started political parties to win Nigeria its independence.

Unfortunately when Nigeria became its own independent country it faced many hard problems. One was that the military coups were too powerful. Some religious groups in the area started to fight. Even the military was too powerful and decided to control every once in a while.

Today Nigeria is still facing problems but every country has problems, like for example, in the US our economy is in the trash and a lot of people still don’t have jobs. Nigeria is also facing some of the same problems we’re facing. Their economy isn’t too great either, some of the people and rulers are corrupted by wealth, not too many people live in towns, and the traffic like in New York City, is horrible.
