The British colonized Malawi by striking bargains with the local chiefs, who became very independent. The British came in and made the slave trade, which meant they made the slaves work. It was not an option for slaves to not work. Slaves work for little money on plantations, but they also had to pay high taxes so they could live.

It hurt the indigenous people, and the British made Nyasaland, (what they used to call the country) their own country, when it wasn’t theirs in the first place.

Nyasaland Malawi won independence by having Hastings Banda head an independence movement. Then it became its own independent state, which now is called Malawi, a one party state.

The problem that they are facing today is that their country is very poor. Their country’s mineral resources are very limited.  Their main resource is their timber, so their forests are very important to them. Also, their lakes, rivers, and streams in their mountains have a wonderful amount of fish.
