Belgians colonized the African country, Rwanda. The Tutsi minorities were treated respectably, while the Hutu were treated like peasants.

The colonization both helped and hurt the indigenous people. The Tutsi gained jobs and good education while the Hutu were oppressed.

While all the Tutsi became wealthy, tension in the Hutu built up. When they had heard about the Tutsi trying to kill all the Hutu political members, the desire for revenge overcame them. the Belgians did almost nothing to help. In 1962 Rwandans voted to become an independent country.

This meant bad things for the Tutsi, because a Hutu was president. Many ran away to Burundi and over 20,000 were killed in cross-border raids. Today they are having population problems, such as being too densely populated.
