LOCATION:

In 1866 the French colonized Mali as part of a group known as the French West Africa. The French treated the people of Mali very poorly, During the first World War, the French sent the indigenous people to fight for them. Back in Mali the indigenous people had to work on French owned farms.

The colonization hurt the indigenous people of Mali when the French came They defeated the army of Guinea. The French also gave the people of Mali no rights at all until 1930 when they earned small rights. They also hurt the Mali people by having them as slaves on farms and making them fight for the people of France.

In the year of 1959 Mali and Sengal formed an alliance known as the Mali Confederation and they overthrew the French. Shortly after that the Mali federation fell apart and Mali became its own country again.

Many other countries began to question the president of Mali’s socialist ways, so he was forced to close the borders and cut off the railroad to the coast. Soon after that the economy crashed so the prices went up and the salary went down and the president was overthrown.

Today the country is in debt to other countries. Since Mali doesn’t have enough money there is little education. Only 50% of men can read and write and only 40% of women can read or write. The average person only lives to be 49 years old because of the many kinds of diseases.
