The British Government took over the land from the BSA Company in 1924.The people were paid very poorly and were forced to live in poor homes.

Colonization did hurt the indigenous people. They were very poor and they were paid poorly, and had to live in poor homes and poor land. Taxes were paid to the British government. In the rural areas, to be able to pay taxes, and get money, they’d have to work in mines.

In 1959, a white government arrested Kaunda (Zambia’s 1st President). Some of his supporters made a United National Independence Party (U.N.I.P). In 1960 Kaunda was released from prison and became the U.N.I.P’s President. In 1962, The British government agreed to end the federation. Then in 1964 Zambia became an independent country.

After the county had won its Independence, Kaunda had a lot of plans for the country like investing in education, heath, roads, and homes. The British had already neglected all of those things. Kaunda plans for Zambia Failed when the price of copper got bad and the price of oil got higher.

A president was elected in 2001 (Levy Mwanawasa). Zambia’s economic problems were severe.

Today Zambia faces heath problems, bad diseases from polluted water and insects, also and HIV and AIDS. Since independence children often stay out of school because they can’t afford uniforms and there is transportation to get them to school. Some people move to the large cities looking for good work, but they don’t find  much.

Many people have there own businesses in their own homes, small businesses like making clothes, mending shoes, and buying and selling anything that is useful to sell.
