The European country that colonized this country was Italy. The Italians took control of Eritrea in the 1880’s. They didn’t treat the natives vey well at all. They used their country as a base from which to attack Ethiopia. They grew oranges and olives around the country but didn’t let the indigenous people have any. It was all reserved for export.
The Italian colonization mainly hurt the indigenous people. Some of the outcomes were good though. In the years of war the Italians took major efforts to improve literacy in Eritrea. Unfortunately they used up all of the natural resources so Eritrea couldn’t develop a good economy. In the years of war the Italians took major efforts to improve literacy in Eritrea.
Eritrea gained its independence during World War II when the allied forces defeated the Italian troops, thus ending the Italian rule over Eritrea. The British then ruled Eritrea for 9 years but they didn’t have any interest in the land for long term use. The British created a federation with Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Once they had they had won their independence they had new conflicts with Ethiopia and then many efforts to stop the fighting failed. After the long wars there were few resources to develop Eritrea’s economy. Today the government is trying to improve education and health care.
