In the 1890’s the French took over Chad. France was in a race with England to get as much African land as they could. They did not treat the indigenous people well when they took over Chad, and they even took the indigenous people out of their villages. In the north, there were battles between the French and the local people of that area.
The slavery from the French hurt the indigenous people. They neglected the people of Chad by taking them away from their families to work at plantations and going south to Middle Congo to build railroads. Most of the plantations were cotton, the main cash crop.
The French had no choice but to give some freedom to the indigenous people and with that in 1958 Chad had self-government. Two years later, the people of Chad had full independence.
