Mali was colonized by the European nation of France. The French people used the people of Mali as workers on farms, and in the military. The Mali people were treated as slaves, until 1930 when they got limited civil rights.
The people of Mali got their independence in 1960, by making an alliance with the colonial state of Senegal known as Mali Federation, but the alliance didn’t last long because after they defeated France the Mali Federation collapsed and Mali became a separate nation.
