Portugal was the country that colonized Angola. The Portuguese that colonized Angola gave European countries many domestic slaves. Later, they made the slave trade into an intercontinental business. They made it with three way traffic between Europe, Africa, and America. The Portuguese set up a fort to hold slaves and also had slave-soldiers to guard the fort walls. Families were split up. Children were taken away from their parents and husbands taken from their wives. During this voyage in the three way traffic, people were crammed into small ships.

Angola was used as a penal colony. Convicted Portuguese were sent to Angola as a punishment and had to do grueling work. Railroads were also constructed, there were diamonds found, and coffee was planted.

Angola became independent in 1961. The way that they became independent was because the Portuguese dictatorship failed. Thousands of the settlers fled to Angola.

After Angola was independent there was civil war. This was a serious problem. Then later the civil war ended, but started again.

Angola is the now fastest growing economy in Africa.
