LOCATION:

France is the country who took over or colonized Mali. When France took over Mali French people came in and changed everything. They tried to change Mali to suit France’s interests. They planted large cotton and peanut-growing plantations to supply Europe with crops. The plan failed, due to shortages and unsuitable soil.

When France took over Mali it hurt the people really badly. They made Bambara men fight in the World War I. Other people worked on French owned farms. The people that worked on farms I think were lucky. I would rather work on somebody’s farm then fight in a war, unless their family was fighting.

The country won its independence in 1962 when president Keita was the 1st president of Mali. He closed all military bases down that were French. He also took the French people out of the currency zone. That means that French money could no longer be used equally with the official currency. President Keita set up businesses to manage agriculture and food.
