  • Athletic Philosophy for Benold Girls AthleticsTeach basic fundamentals to introduce sports to some girls, for some girls to compete on a higher level, and to prepare the girls to be high school athletes.  While competing, our goal is to encourage responsibility, hard work, and good sportsmanship/citizenship.

        Athletics is not Physical Education.

This class is designed for girls who desire to compete in sports.

  • UniformAll athletes must have the proper uniform.  Uniforms are gray athletic t-shirts with last name on back and royal blue shorts.  The shorts must have a 4” inseam.  This uniform may be purchased at Georgetown Sporting Goods.  Be sure and purchase the Athletic Shirt and not the physical education shirt. **This does not apply to Tennis players. Tennis players will purchase their shirts when they make the team.

  • Drug Testing – All extracurricular students are randomly drug tested.  This is a GISD policy.

  • Sports and SchedulingVolleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Tennis are the sports offered in athletics.  Girls may participate in one or more sports throughout the school year.  There is one contest per week with the exception of tournament play.  During volleyball and basketball, each team will play in two tournaments.  If a girl wants to run cross country and not play basketball, she does not need to be scheduled into an athletic period.  Girls who run cross country/track and do not play volleyball or basketball, will need to be in athletics the second semester. Girls who play Tennis can also participate in volleyball, basketball, track and cross country.

Volleyball games are played on Thursday, Cross Country meets are on Wednesday, Basketball games are played on Monday or Thursday, and Track meets are held on either Tuesday or Thursday. Tennis matches days and times to be determined.

After school practices at Forbes for relay teams, hurdles or jumping events will be on Tuesdays during the season.

  • UIL and EligibilityThe University Interscholastic League (UIL) controls all extra curricular activities in public schools.  The UIL has established guide lines which are followed.  All athletes must be passing in all classes in order to compete in any event.  All athletes must have an athletic physical yearly along with various forms on file with their campus coaches.

  • Team Selection and TryoutsVolleyball and Basketball have tryouts.  Usually 20 – 25 girls will be selected to play on either the A or B team.  Volleyball tryouts begin the second day of school, Basketball tryouts will begin at the conclusion of volleyball season.  Girls who want to run Cross Country and/or Track will need attend practices in order to compete.

Girls who tryout and do not make the volleyball team will then go to the “Off Season” class and will begin working   on basketball skills.  If not selected for the basketball team, the “Off Season” group will begin training for track.

  • Camps The girls are not required to attend volleyball and/or basketball camps, but are strongly encouraged to attend.  Camps help prepare the girls for athletics by improving their skill level.  Various camp forms are posted on the large bulletin board that is between the dressing room doors.

  • Injuries/Absence and ParticipationIf an athlete is injured or ill but attends school she is expected to do what she can.  If absent from school, the athlete is expected to do a predetermined workout.
