- This award started in 1921
and was founded by Frederic G.Melcher and the medal itself was designed
by René Paul Chamberlin. In 1922 the responsibility of selecting a book
for the award was place under the rule of The American Library
Association Executive Board under the Children's Librarians' Section.
- The awards name came from the name of an English bookseller, John
Newbery. The award is given to the author who writes the most
distinguished American children's book published in the previous year.
The award was created to encourage book writers to write for children to
get them interested in reading. This award was the first children’s book
award to be given in the world. Since this award was founded there
have been 85 awards given out. The first Newbery award was given to
Hendrik Willem van Loon for his book The Story of Mankind in 1922 and
the latest award was given to the 2006 winner Criss Cross by Lynne Rae
Perkins.

- These are books that where cited
by the ALSC (The Association for Library Service to Children) for
attention. These are “runner-up’s” as they were called until in 1971
when the name changed to Honor Books. These are good books chose each
year that the ALSC believes are worthy of honorable mention as the name
states. There can be few or several chose each year.

- Fiction- the fiction books that were selected for this award in my
opinion not only encourage the children to read, but also have a theme
or moral that is hidden in the story that tries to apply itself to the
child’s life. In other terms it teaches the children something about
life. I personally like the fiction because of the plot and adventure
and think any Newberry Award winner would make a good book. An example
would be Johnny Tremain. This is a story about Boston, Massachusetts in
the time before the revolution, the events leading to the revolution,
the famous people he meets, and ultimately the revolution and the parts
this boy (Johnny Tremain) plays in it.

- Non Fiction- these selections are usually a autobiography of a persons
life or a outline of a certain time period. An example would be Lincoln:
An Autobiography. This book tells about Lincoln from a child to when he
was president and how he deals with the civil war and the many other
responsibilities and decisions he faced as president.
