Welcome to 6th Grade!  My name is Mrs. Thomas, and I am very excited to be your guide through Language Arts this year.   This is going to be a very successful and fun year, and I hope you are as excited about it as I am. 

Starting this week, all CORE classes will have a spelling test, and Pre-AP will do a writing exercise with the spelling words.

Distinguish – to set apart as different

Contrast – to show unlikeness or difference

Describe – illustrate, use words to represent

Examine – to observe, test, or investigate; inspect

Differentiate – identify differences

Compare – identify similarities and differences

Calculate – to determine by mathematical methods; to compute

Classify – to arrange or organize

Collect – to gather together; to assemble

Construct – to build or put together

Analyze – to examine carefully and in detain so as to identify causes, key factors, possible results, etc.

Identify – to recognize or establish; to choose or decide

·         Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space

·         Solid – atoms are arranged very orderly; has a definite shape and volume

·         Liquid – atoms are loosely held together; has a definite volume but not a definite shape

·         Gas – atoms are very far apart and moving around very quickly; has no definite shape or volume

·         Atoms – the building blocks of all matter; made of protons (+), neutrons (0), and electrons (-)

Abundant:  a great quantity.  A lot.

Evaluate:  to determine the significance, worth, or condition of usually by careful appraisal and study

Communicate: to convey knowledge of or information about : make known

Accuracy:  freedom from mistake or error

Sustain - to keep going; sustainable; having to do with keeping species or environments healthy
Valid - relating to conclusions based on graphs and charts; ex - which of these is a valid conclusion based on the information in the table?
Deposit/deposited - when sediment (sand, rock, dirt) is dropped or settles out of moving water or wind
Influenced - to have an affect on; how the environment can change traits of organisms; humans influence on the environment;
