A BRIEF HISTORY OF GHANA
The British colonized the Gold Coast in the 19th century with a forceful hand. After outlawing slavery they took over the forts that were used by the Portuguese traders and used them as posts. They signed treaties and pacts with as many local chiefs as possible.
The colonization hurt and helped the indigenous people. The Ashanti tribe was making multiple trades and capturing goods from many other countries but the British wanted to capture Kumasi, the capital city of the Gold Coast. When the Ashanti tribe refused, the British sacked the city. Resistance continued until 1900 then the Ashanti met the British in an attack and lost, but destroyed almost all of Kumasi with them.
The Ashanti gained independence in March of 1957. In the early 1900’s groups of political parties were bound for African independence,. Kwame Nkrumah, the secretary general for the country’s leading party, broke away and created the “Convention People's Party (CPP) in 1947. Nkrumah was thrown in jail for calling a national strike on the country. During his imprisonment the (CPP) won three general elections and brought the country to freedom.
Freedom brought them to the name of Ghana, but they were still left with many problems. They had multiple food shortages and had to execute former heads of state and senior officers in a House Cleaning operation. Many groups broke out in demonstrations against the rule. In modern Ghana food shortages are still a problem. Also there are upcoming elections that will determine Ghana’s future.
I think that Ghana’s land would be stripped of resources in modern times if nobody had colonized it. The government would have taken the land and manufactured all the goods out of the country and exported it to other countries to make money.
