A BRIEF HISTORY OF REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

In 1880 a French man named Pierre Savorgnan signed a document that gave France complete control over the Congo. When they had control, the Congo was first called the French Congo, and then in 1905 they changed it to the Middle Congo. In 1910 the country was turned into the colony of French Equatorial Africa. The French abused the Africans so much that it let out a public outcry against the French.

The colonization hurt the Africans pretty badly because they did hard labor and lived in harsh slavery. A lot of Africans died during the time when French had control over the Congo. The labor was just as brutal as the labor in the Belgian territory across the river, but the Congo received more attention than the other territory.

After the outcry against the French in 1910, the natives still worked until 1930. After a lot of rebellions, fighting, and protesting the Congo eventually proclaimed its independence in 1960 without leaving the French community. The country was then called The Republic of the Congo. The type of government they used is dictatorship which is when one person rules and they have unlimited power over The Republic of the Congo.

After they became independent the government faced many problems. One of the problems is that everyone wanted to be dictator so, every time a person had power they were either overthrown or assassinated. Also wars were breaking out against the rebels. These are the same problems they are facing today. The people who try to assassinate the presidents were called ninja rebels until 2003 when the government and the ninjas signed a treaty.

If the country had never been colonized then I think the population of The Republic of the Congo would be a whole lot larger because the French wouldn’t have tortured them in labor and slavery. Also I think the government would be a mess because they would fight for control over the country. Another thing is that wars would probably break out because of the power to rule The Congo.
