A BRIEF HISTORY OF SUDAN
In 1882 British soldiers went into Sudan and took it over with force. The British soldiers and rulers treated the people in the far south part of Sudan like slaves. They treated the northern indigenous people well, but still controlled almost everything there.
Colonization really hurt the indigenous people, because the British would attack villages and take the people living there as slaves. They made them work in the swamps or the grasslands to gather things needed for British living. They didn’t only enslave people; they also helped to build up villages for the people to live in, and for themselves to live in. in some cases they supplied food, made schools for education, and many other things.
In 1955, the Sudanese soldiers were put under northern control, which made the soldiers furious. They mutinied against their controller, and killed many people. Over 70 of the soldiers were found, captured, and killed. The rest of the soldiers who mutinied ran away and hid. Later that year, the rulers of Sudan decided that it might be time to let them have their own government and be free, and on January 1st 1956, they were granted independence.
Since they have won independence, the northern and southern parts of Sudan have been in a civil war, because they have different views about how they should govern themselves. There were many troubles they were facing before they won independence, but there are still more problems now that they are free. A few problems the United States tried to fix, like when the Sudanese had a factory making chemical weapons, the U.S. blew it up to stop them from starting a war, but they killed many people around it too. There is slavery still wide spread in the country and many of the top military and militia leaders have been charged with mass murder, rape, and many other crimes.
I think that if the British had never colonized Sudan, the Egyptians would still be in control, and the Sudanese would have never gotten their freedom.
