A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALGERIA
The French colonized Algeria. The French people were treating the Algerians like they were dirt. They were treated like slaves, their taxes went up, and land got taken away by the French.
The French hurt the native people (Algerians). The French hurt them by taking farm land, putting heavier taxes on the natives, and giving the natives fewer privileges than the French. The land that got taken up by the French was very valuable for growing crops, and providing water, and the taxes helped the French to become more rich. I do not agree with what the French did but I see why they did what they did.
In March of 1962, Algeria won its independence from the France. They fought for seven years with France.. Terror campaigns were led by native Algerians and pied-noir settlers. This war for independence claimed millions of lives until the French president decided to give back the Algerians’ independence.
If you think there wasn’t any problem after the Algerians claimed their independence, you are wrong. Algeria had very little political change. There were protests against the government and the food shortages Algeria faced. There were between one hundred sixty and six hundred people that died. Problems they are facing today are threats of terrorism. Algeria has suffered a very large number of deadly bombings. The most recent bombing was December 11, 2007, killing dozens of people and injuring close to two hundred. In September 2007, separate bomb attacks happened in two cities, killing at least fifty people.
If Algeria hadn’t colonized by the French, I think they would be better than they are today. There probably wouldn’t be as many bombings and terrorist attacks. I think there wouldn’t be any food shortages. I also think their government would be better.
