A BRIEF HISTORY OF ZAMBIA
Conner Dean
Zambia was colonized by Great Britain. The British did not treat the Africans very well. They were used as laborers when large copper ore deposits were found.
The colonization hurt the people of Zambia (called Northern Rhodesia at the time.) The people didn’t really have a choice but to work in the mines. Their only other source of money was farming. It paid, but it didn’t pay enough. They needed the extra money to pay the newly introduced hut taxes.
The British rule ended in 1963 when the federation dissolved. After gaining independence, Northern Rhodesia took the name Zambia coming from the name of the Zambezi River. Not everything was great after British rule ended.
The new country of Zambia suffered from a legacy of British rule under which the British taxed the Zambians to the bone, and spent most of that money on Southern Rhodesia. Zambia is not facing many problems today. Only one problem really, and it is political problems.
Despite all the problems with the colonization, I think colonization helped Zambia a tad. After all, the British were the ones that discovered the copper mines, which helped the Zambians make money. It is a good thing though that they gained freedom.
