A BRIEF HISTORY OF GHANA

The country of Ghana was colonized by the British in the mid 1700’s, along with Danes, Swedes, and Dutch. They came because of large amounts of gold and ivory. The British were ignoring the people living there already (the Ghanaians) due to all the gold the British were mining.

The British colonizing hurt the indigenous people because of the mines.

In 1946, British started to leave Ghana and other countries they had taken over due to all the wars that had occurred, and the first constitution was formed in 1951. In 1957, Ghana became the first country in colonial Africa to gain its independence.

In 1992, a new constitution was formed and Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings was elected president and in 1996, he served his second term as president. John Kufuor, the current president, is serving his second term, which ends this year.

If Ghana was never colonized, they might not have had a constitution.
