A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGER
The French colonized Niger. There were bloody massacres and executions. The French did not treat the people as slaves, but there was a lot of fighting. Eventually the British came to help the French and Niger suffered a major defeat. In 1992 Niger made peace with France and became a French colony.
In some ways the colonization helped Niger. It helped Niger because the French helped Niger get a voting system.
Niger got it’s independence on August 3, 1960. There were two opposing political groups. Diori soon won the Territorial Assembly elections.
One problem they had was a huge drought in 1973. A big problem they had was that they didn’t have a stable government. There were several revolutions and assassinations. Lieutenant- Colonel Seyni K Ounthe even suspended the constitution.
Some problems they are facing today are that in 2005 Niger faced natural disasters such as the worst locust infestation in 15 years and a severe drought. On July 24, 2004 municipal elections were successful.
