A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOMALIA
During the 1700’s the European nations began to claim parts of Africa. The country of Somalia was colonized by Great Britain. The British treated the locals with disrespect. They had to let soldiers stay in their homes, were not allowed to vote or have any association with political parties. The British saw Somalia as a place where livestock could be raised, they also thought the location was good for trading centers.
When the colonization took place, the locals did not approve of it. The colonization group only helped a little bit. They built new schools, created a court system and improved the agriculture. The colonization only worked for a little while because the locals soon wanted independence and started a civil war.
The locals fought the British for their land and Somalia won its independence by having a small holy war or jihad. When the war was finally over, they voted for independence in 1977. The British had lost the civil war and retreated into Italian grounds for regrouping. Soon they tried again but were defeated again by the local people. The Muslim leader’s name was Mohammed bin. The British called him the Mad Mullah.
Somalia faced many problems when they became independent; including famine, financial and political problems. The biggest threat of all came from a Muslim leader named General Mohammad Bin. General Mohammad threatened to assonate the president because he didn’t like the method the president ruled by. The Somalia political system became a dictatorship. In the current times, the Somalian people are facing problems with education, strangers and disease.
