A BRIEF HISTORY OF CONGO

The French took over The Republic of the Congo in 1880 by signing a treaty with Makoko, ruler of the Bateke people. The Republic of the Congo was dominated by three kingdoms in the precolonial times. The Africans were not treated fairly and considered uncivilized.

The colonization hurt the indigenous people. The Africans were slaves to King Leopold, Some families were held hostages and people who refused to work had their hands cut off. They had to work in the jungles.

The Congo proclaimed its independence in 1960 by not leaving the French community and calling itself The Republic of Congo.

After they became independent, they still had political problems. There are still rebels today that fight against government forces.
