A BRIEF HISTORY OF MALAWI
The British colonized Malawi and at first treated the indigenous pygmies called the Akafula, nicely. The first high commissioner, Sir Harry John, ended slavery using gunboats from the Royal Navy to wipe out slavers. At first the British treated the people of Malawi well with the end of Arab slavery .
Although the British had ended the long torturous years of slavery for the people of Malawi, the people still did not trust the British. Later, the British earned the people’s trust by improving trade, education, and travel and over-all life.
Many Rhodesians came to Malawi, and took over native lands. This made the natives' land smaller. There were many fights. Eventually on February 1,1963 Nyasaland was given self-government . On July 6, one year later, Nyasaland gained full independence. Two years later , Nyasaland became Malawi.
