A BRIEF HISTORY OF GHANA
The European country that colonized Ghana was Great Britain. The Europeans took Ghana’s gold and made more money by trading their people as slaves. The British signed treaties with tribal chiefs, but when the tribes became wealthy the British took Ghana’s capital over in the name of the British king.
Colonization helped the Ghanaians. The colonization helped the Ghanaians by building roads, schools, and hospitals. They established one of the best economies in Africa and the area became known as the Gold Coast.
Ghana won its independence on March 6, 1957. In 1956 the British incorporated Ghana by referendum.
Once Ghana became independent they faced an economic decline from 1957 to 1982. By the year 1966 Ghana had one trillion dollars in debt.
Since the year 2000, Ghana has seen changes in their political leadership from a military leader, Jerry Rawlings, to the leader of the New Patriotic Party, John Kufuor. It is thought that past and current projects have failed for the average Ghanaian and only time will tell the country’s future “political maturity.”
If Ghana had never been colonized they wouldn’t have the roads, schools, hospitals, dams, or various religions that they got as soon as they did.
