A BRIEF HISTORY OF BOTSWANA
People started to flood into southern Africa and settle in around 1600.The first white man to go into the land was most likely William Burchell. He explored in 1811 and made a diary and illustrated with local paints. More and more Europeans flooded the area. There were two main groups of Europeans, British and Dutch; the Dutch basically were looking for non-British owned farmland to grow crops on. However, the British treated the native Tazwan very kindly. They did not take slaves and they set up a protectorate to protect them from the Dutch.
Colonization really helped the natives because it brought fourth a government and protection from the Dutch. It also brought British medical care, teaching, hunting, building and farming methods. It also founded the country’s massive gold and diamond supplies.
Britain basically gave the country its independence on September 30 1966. the British moved out and gave Botswana a constitution to make itself a country.
Even though independence had its own set of problems, like mass unemployment, it had its positives, like not having to pay British taxes. They are even having problems today like mass unemployment and HIV disease it is killing lots of people in Botswana.
Botswana might be a very different country without colonization It might not have a government It might be very poor because the British found the gold and diamond deposits in the country, so Botswana might not be a country without Britain.
