A BRIEF HISTORY OF SUDAN
Sudan was colonized by Great Britain. The people of Sudan were used as slaves. The British controlled the land.
Colonization hurt Sudan. Sudan was separated into two regions (north and south). The people were fighting among themselves. Religious beliefs and traditions also caused division.
Sudan proclaimed its independence on January 1, 1956. In 1953, Britain granted Sudan self-government. Sudan was ruled by a series of unstable governments and military regimes. Differences in language, religion, ethnicity and political power erupted. Human rights violations, religious persecution and slavery plagued Sudan. Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world. There is a shortage of skilled workers and employment opportunities. Sudan also has limited energy sources. The transportation facilities are limited. They have few railroads and roads. The rainy season makes it difficult to transport goods.
