A BRIEF HISTORY OF ZIMBABWE

The country that took over Zimbabwe was Great Britain. The country of Great Britain made the indigenous people to leave their country. They made them move to southern Rhodesia. They made a colony and with its own government. Finally in 1963 they voted for their independence.

The colonization hurt the country because the people had to move out. This took place during the 1850’s when the British came. It hurt Zimbabwe because they had to move out and fight to regain their independence. In 1923 the European settlers voted and became the self-governing British colony of southern Rhodesia. Now northern Rhodesia is called Zimbabwe.

On November 11, 1965, the white minority government of Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain. The country had resisted demands of black Africans. On March 1, 1970, the country was proclaimed a republic. In 1976, withdrawl of South American military aid marked the beginning of the collapse of Smith’s 11th year of resistance. Blacks gained more power after independence.

The problems that Zimbabwe faced after they gained their independence were that Mugabe caused squatting over land with the white land owners. This disrupted the powers of the government and hurt the economy of the country. Since 2002, Mugabe was reelected president and the country had problems with food shortage and farming. By the year of 2007 the country’s inflation has reached 7,000% as of right now the world's highest.

Today the country is faced with many problems. The problems are riots with activists, high unemployment rates and shortage of supplies. The police have beaten and arrested dozens of activists. Mugabe had forbid political opponents from leaving the country and has banned political meetings. Today Zimbabwe would probably still be called Rhodesia.
