A BRIEF HISTORY OF SIERRA LEONE
In the 1500s Portuguese men came and stayed in Sierra Leone and married African women. Their children were called the Krio and had both African and Portuguese culture and languages. About that time the slave trade began, and some of the Krio were taken as slaves.
Then the British came and made Sierra Leone a protectorate, freed some of the slaves and made the city of Freetown. The British brought protection, but the British made them pay taxes. The British gave the Africans good jobs and better education. They were looking for land to expand their religions and traditions and to put military forces there.
Some Africans were mad they didn’t get places in the government so they formed
Peoples Party. After a while Peoples Party took over administrative spots. Then Sir
Milton Margai took over. He didn’t do what he promised so they had a civil war and they
got independence Freetown became part of Sierra Leone. Their
Independence Day is April 24,1968.
