A BRIEF HISTORY OF Malawi
By: Kayman P.
In 1889 the British came to Malawi to find land for farming, and the British declared the land was theirs, but the people in Malawi didn’t like that so they fought back. The British also were looking for slaves. The slave trade was ended in 1907. They hurt the people of Malawi when they colonized. The cruel people made the people of Africa become slaves and dug up resources and good land to farm on. The British were taxing people’s homes and required that payments were made out in cash.
In 1961 the British were forced to hold independence talks. Elections also went on in this year and were won by Banda’s Malawi congress party. In 1964 Nyasaland became the independent nation of Malawi.
