A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIGERIA
The country that colonized Nigeria was the British. British took control between 1804-1808. During this change in time, there was a lot of trading going on. Around the 15th century, the Portuguese started to trade with the people of the coast. They traded many things such as: cheap iron, cloths, guns, and copper, and they traded that for: ivory, gold, and pepper. Soon after the Dutch, French, and the British started to get slaves. The slaves then were put to work on the plantations. In the 19th century, the slave trade was established.
When Nigeria was colonized, many new things began. There were slaves, trading, and much more. When Northern dominated Nigeria’s new independence, the other regions soon created fear. Around 1996 there was a conflict between major ethic groups.
Soon the civilian rule returned for 4 years, 1979-1983. The military remained in power between 1980- 1990. They handed over the power to the military. Then, General Sani Abacha seized power in 1993. He then died in 1997, with successors agreeing for new elections.
