Very Important Information Message for Players and Parents:
A question has arisen concerning the schedule for the Boys in Athletics who are not playing Basketball or Tennis. Let me begin where we left off, and that was Football Season.
When Football ended on November 11th (A Playoff Game) we held 3 days of Basketball tryouts for all boys who were interested in making the 7th or 8th Grade Boys Basketball Teams. We had over 40 boys in each of the 7th and 8th Grades who were interested in trying out. The boys who did not try out helped the Coaching Staff thoroughly inventory, clean, account, and store Football equipment for over 160 kids!
Once our Basketball Rosters were established we began our "Off Season" on Monday November 18th.
Over the course of the next week (November 18-22) we put the boys through a battery of Tests that included measurements in:
Performance Based Tests:
40 Yard Dash
20 Yard Pro Shuttle
Vertical Jump
Standing Long Jump
Strength Based Tests:
Bench Press
Incline Press
Power Clean
Squat
Non Strength or Performance Tests:
Height
Weight
The Next Week (November 24-28) was shortened to only 2 school days due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. On Monday the 24th we had a Strength workout using non-Weight apparatus' (120 PushUps 120 Crunch Sit Ups). On Tuesday we ran a Timed 1 Mile Run (used for both Athletics and the State-Mandated Fitness Gram*). The kids did not have school Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.
We began December (Monday the 1st) with a Split Workout, Meaning that Half of the boys went to the Weight Room to Bench and Squat (approx. 22 minutes) while the remaining boys did part of their Fitness Gram* Testing with their Crunch and PushUp Test. We switched the boys mid-period and the other half of boys Tested. On Tuesday(2nd), we conditioned (12-100 yard sprints). Wednesday (3rd) back to the Weight Room for half to Hang Clean and Incline (approx. 22 minutes) while half the boys took their Trunk Lift and Touch tests for Fitness Gram*(Again, we swithced the boys mid-period). On Thursday (4th) we conditioned (10-10 yrd., 8-20 yrd.,6 40 yrd., 4-80 yrd., and 2-100 yrd. Sprints). On Friday (5th) we had our first "normal" off-season day as we divided the boys into 6 (2 man) groups and went through our "Cycle" that included: Station 1: Bench Press, Station 2: Curls, Station 3: Squat, Station 4: Jump Rope, Station 5: Medicine Ball Work (Today was Lunges), and Station 6: Push Ups. Stations 1-3 are on "Command" lifting (3 sets of 10), while Stations 4-6 are on Repetitions. We ended the Workout with our 212° Exercise for the Day (Today was 6" lifts).
December 8-12 was our first "normal off-season week" in that we again lifted on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We Conditioned on Tuesday and Thursday. This is our normal work week schedule and will be so until school is out in June. Monday the lifts were: Bench, Curls, and Hang Clean. Wednesday the lifts were: Incline, Triceps, and Squat. The 7th Grade Boys did not lift that day due to the Heart Health Screening (approx. 50 7th Grade Boys were tested) and the District Drug Screen (approx 15 boys tested). Friday the lifts were: Bench, Incline Push Ups, and Power Clean. Tuesday the Stations were: Jump Rope, MedBall Passes, and Partner Crunches.
This Week, December 15-19 we have done the following: Monday the Lifts were: Squat, Bench, and Military Press (seated). The Stations were: Walking Lunges, Jump Ropes, and Partner Push Ups. We ended the Workout with our 212° Exercise for the Day (Today was 100 Pushups). We did not have 7th Grade Boys first period due to a scheduled assembly in the Cafeteria, but for the 8th Grade Boys: Wednesday the lifts were: Incline, Triceps, and Hang Clean. The Stations were: Jump Ropes, MedBall Exchanges, and Partner Stretch. We ended the Workout with our 212° Exercise for the Day (Today was 50 Squat Jumps). Tuesday's Conditioning was augmented for the 7th Grade Boys First Period due to the sub 30 degree weather. We held Study-Hall in the Locker Room during the Period. The 8th Grade Boys did a Push Up/AB work out in the locker room.
We will continue this type of schedule until the end of the first semester (January 16). Once we begin the Second Semester (January 19-June 2) We, and all GISD Middle Schools, will go through Phases I-III of our Georgetown Athletic Department Strength and Conditioning Program. During this time we will Test in the Phases mentioned earlier, no less than 3 times.
My complete intention for giving you this information is to assure those Parents who feel we are not working their kids out "hard enough" and those that feel we are working their kids out "too hard" that we (Coaches) are indeed working your son out as hard as we can during the Time we have with them and encourage them that if the are not getting enough to take some of this "home" and do some of these exercises, we teach them, there. All we ask is that your son:
Show up Every Day!
Work as Hard as Possible!
Focus on the Result and not the Discomfort!
Be Serious about getting Better!
What I ask of you is: Before complaining, ask your son if he is doing the above. My door is open to every single one of you if you would like to sit down and discuss this.
Thank You,
George Hauser, Boys' Athletic Coordinator
