The Shaping of the English Language:
Britannia first through eleventh centuries
a 7th grade Pathfinder

THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH  - SIX GROUP PROJECTS - Choose one

You are a Roman soldier who was sent to Britannia a year ago by the Emperor of Rome.  You have become quite homesick and decide to write a letter to your uncle, Octavius, who lives back in Rome. In your letter address the following things:

1.  What has happened in Britannia during the last year? How has your life changed?

2.  What are the Celts like? What does their language sound like? What do their homes look like? Describe some of their artwork.

3.  What do you miss about Rome? How is Britannia different than Rome?

4.  Draw some pictures to include in the letter. Show some of the ways the Roman army has helped “civilize” the Celts. Draw a landscape of Britannia. Help Octavius understand how different Britannia is from Rome.

You are a Celtic chieftain/warrior. Your lands have been invaded by Roman soldiers who are trying to take over your country. Since you do not have a written language, you express your thoughts and emotions through music and art.  Draw pictures of the following:

1.  A Roman soldier in full military dress with weapons

2.  A landscape of your beautiful homeland (Britannia) and a picture of your own home and family

3.  A battle plan where you hope to defeat the Romans and send them back to Rome.

4.  What your alphabet might look like if you had a written language

You are an Anglo, Saxon, or Jute who has agree to help King Vortigern defeat the Picts. Describe your journey from Germania or Jutland to Britannia. (Be specific – think of how difficult a journey it must have been – sleeping outside, eating on the go, unpleasant weather, danger everywhere) Describe your impressions of King Vortigern and his kingdom. Draw a map showing your route from Germania (or Jutland) to King Vortigern’s kingdom. Use topographical features on your map as well as some Anglo-Saxon words (at least one or two) to make your map look authentic.

You are a time traveler who has just arrived in England about five days before the Battle of Hastings. What is King Harold doing? What language is being spoken? You want to find a way to get into King Harold’s “inner circle” so that you have a first hand experience. What do you do to make this happen? Describe your experiences in detail. Draw pictures to elaborate and to take back with you so that you can share the details with future time travelers. What have you heard from Harold’s men about Duke William? Are people scared, angry, bored, etc?

You are a time traveler who has just arrived in England five years after the Battle of Hastings? What are things like in England? Tell about the lives of the French Nobles and English Peasants. How are their lives different? How are their languages different? Draw pictures that show a daily scene in the life of an English Peasant. Also draw pictures that show a daily scene in the life of a French Noble.

You are an archeologist. Your team has uncovered the ancient diaries of King Vortigern, King Harold, and Duke William. Your group needs to compose (create, write) those three diaries as you imagine they would have been written. Be creative but also historically accurate. Each diary must have a minimum of ten entries from ten different days of the owner’s life. Three rulers – three diaries. Try to make the diaries look and sound authentic.
