Planning with PAL (Pathfinders and
Librarians);
resources for research and writing
In-service Pathfinder
GISD
PROGRAM GOAL:
Provide educational experiences that will enable each gifted and
talented student to demonstrate advanced skills in self-directed
learning, higher level thinking, problem solving, research and
communication through innovative products and performances that show
depth and complexity.
GISD
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
- utilize instructional
deliveries that will create a learning environment that is
open-ended, student directed and problem and inquiry focused;
-
provide opportunities for students to participate in guided and
independent research that may lead to the G/T State Performance
Standards Projects
In accordance with the GISD goals and objectives above,
the primary goal for this in-service is to provide the time and
structure to produce or enhance a lesson/unit/project that aligns with
the individual participants' TEKS and Scope and Sequence.
This in-service will afford an opportunity to
collaborate with the librarian to complete a lesson plan
with an information need at its core.
-
We will briefly cover
Big6™/Super3™ and Pathfinder as useful and uniform tools with which
to structure this process.
-
We will also introduce
information resources available in the district leaving sufficient
time for exploration.
-
We will propose
collaborations whereby the librarian can teach needed research
skills within the context of the unit.

Citation
Citations are the formal method for giving credit to source
materials--print, electronic, or online. Citation help is provide within many
programs.
Destiny:
Student should log in and create a personal list by selecting titles and
clicking "add to list." Selections may be made from the "public list" posted for
the Civil War project. Once the list is complete, view the list in "Resource
Lists" and click the "citation" button for each title. This template may be
edited to assure correct information. There is an option for both print and
online lists. The "online" citation includes only the minimum information.
Additional data may be added. The template may be used to format citations from
other resources.
At the bottom of the page, find "Create Citation List" and
click. The formatted list will save in Destiny until the student does a "Remove
All." Students may also copy these lists to a Word document and save it to the
home folder.
Britannica,
World Book
and other databases have citation information at the end of the article.
Students may copy these to their Word document being sure to check for correct
formatting.
Citation Machine and
KnightCite are online tools
for creating citations. Choose the template that corresponds to the resource
type.
This Style
Manual gives examples of citations for various types of materials.
