A Decade of Space
A Sixth Grade Pathfinder

Space exploration began as a dream and was imagined by science fiction writers and comic strip designers. The science of space exploration came to fruition in the mid-twentieth century and continues to advance as new discoveries and technologies create opportunities and lead to successes.

In order to appreciate the scope of what has been accomplished, students will research in a given decade from 1950- 2010 and choose significant people and events that are highlights in each era. There are four topics: Unmanned Spacecraft (probes, satellites, robotics); Space Exploration (planets, comets, asteroids, meteors); People who Influenced Space Exploration (astronauts, engineers, politicians); and Space Travel (rockets, shuttles, space stations).

Students will combine their individual topical work with their group to produce a single timeline for each decade. Students must be able to explain why their choices are significant and how they influenced future developments.

The mission of Benold Middle School Library is to promote both reading competency and enjoyment, and to provide instruction in information literacy and curricular support. Students will acquire the necessary skills to become competent seekers and users of information. Our effort is a collaboration with the campus and G.I.S.D. instructional team, district and other professional librarians and information technology specialists.
