"Treasure Reading" at the Book Fair
Arrrrrr, mates!
Scholastic Book Fair was a golden event. Thanks to all who supported
“Treasure Reading” with a pirate twist. In addition to our monetary profit,
the library received over $1000 in books for the library.
Our
appreciation to Down the Alley Bistro. Four lucky adults won gift
certificates to try their cuisine. Some students also received Pirate snack
packs while others received coupons for free books. From all the classes
that participated in the "gold"fish guess, Mr. Brinley's class came closest
and received ice cream coupons. Mrs. Loera's class received the prize for
the Book Clues treasure hunt.
A thousand
thank yous to Brenda Oser and her team of volunteers who set up, took down
and cashiered in order to make our fair a success.
The next
Book Fair will be the end of February 2010.
Check the
Scholastic website for more information on future events. |

Log in to DESTINY--Check
out Destiny QUEST
Destiny
is the program that allows students to look up books,
the replacement for the old "card catalog." This is web-based and can be
accessed from any computer connected to the Internet. Now students have a
"login" for Destiny that allows
them extra privileges.
First, students have a "My Info" tab that allows them to see
checkouts, overdues, and fines on their record. Next, they can generate
individual book and website lists. The program will also create citations
from these selections.
Additional features that students may use are to request their
own holds for books, add reviews to books they have read, and also submit a
title to the Wish List. Students who would like to learn more about this item
should visit with Mrs. Huba.
The "big" news is Destiny Quest, a whole new way to view the
Benold Library collection and all the books in the district. Check out the
Top 10 and the latest additions to our shelves. Students seem to really like
the virtual Shelf Browse. Ask your student to give you a tour.

Online Databases
Benold Library has just
acquired online subscriptions to several new Marshall Cavendish Digital
materials. These include science databases: Exploring Earth and Space
Science, Exploring Technology, and Inventors and Inventions. Previous
purchases were: Exploring Life Science,
Earth and Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Growing Up with Science for
students at all levels. In addition, the Peoples of Europe is joined by
Peoples of Africa, both benefitting 6th
grade researchers.
All online resources may be accessed from
home. Be sure to get the passwords from Mrs. Huba. |

Literacy Walk
2009--Walk ON!!
The Sixth Annual Benold Literacy Walk took place the
Friday before spring break, March 13, 2009. Because of rain and other
weather alerts, we walked laps in the big gym for the first time.
Nonetheless, it was a day of
exercise, fun, and food! Once again the Language Arts teachers and P.T.A. parents
teamed up to make this event a great way to start off the vacation. Thanks
to all who contributed their time and made cookies for the concession
stand.
It was a great day for hot chocolate at the concession stand
and the N.J.H.S. bake sale sold put a 7th period. Proceeds benefit the library and the language arts
curriculum. Past purchases include audio books, class set novels,
books for the library, and AR quizzes.
netTrekker is also funded
through the activity fund. Your continued support for the library and its
mission is greatly appreciated.
Last year, Mrs. Huba only managed 42 laps because of the
heat. This year walking those nice short laps, she tallied up 110 but she's
not sure how many that is in real life.

FOOD FOR FINES!
The library has accepted "food for fines"
for much of this school year. Students may "pay" their late fines by
bringing a non-perishable food item for the Caring Place. Please help
your student to become a responsible library user and develop an
awareness of others who are less fortunate.

Volunteers are KEY
to student and school success! |
There are many
opportunities to share in the educational experience that match your talents
and interests. Just ask us!! Do you
have a creative flair? Mrs. Huba is always looking for someone to help with
the large display windows outside the library.
