Seat Belt Safety Awareness

February 9 - 13, 2008 is

National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week

This week in class we have talked about children being properly restrained in a motor vehicle.  Some of the things we discussed are the current laws along with ways that are recommended to restrain children safely in moving vehicles.  We want our students and parents to know how important it is in case of an accident that everyone in a motor vehicle is properly secured to allow them to be as safe as possible and avoid unnecessary injuries.  Your child should have taken home a brochure along with their height and weight. Please use that to compare with the recommended way that size child should be secured in a vehicle.  Talk about this with you child and try and make wise decisions when riding or driving a vehicle.  To find out more information click on Safe Riders.

Texas Law

ALL CHILDREN

1.  Under 4 yrs. old

Or

2.         Less than 36 inches tall

MUST  BE secured in a safety seat!!

3.  Children Ages 4 to 16 MUST BE

SECURED by a safety belt no matter where they sit!!!

Recommendations

1.   Children under 12 should ride by being properly restrained in a REAR SEAT OF A CAR!!

2.  Infants should NEVER ride in the front seat of a vehicle with a PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG!

INFANTS

Infants should ride in a rear-facing safety seat until they are at least 1 year old and weigh at least 20 pounds and the safety seat should recline about 45-degrees in a rear seat of a car.

TODDLERS

Children weighing 20 to 40 pounds and more than 1 year old should ride facing forward in a safety seat in a rear seat of a car or other vehicle.

YOUNG CHILDREN

Children weighing between 40 to 80 pounds and under 4’ 9” tall should use a booster seat.  This will raise you up so a car’s safety belts will fit you  and you can also see outside better.

Remember

1.The safest place to ride is IN

   THE BACK SEAT!

2.Listen for the latch to CLICK!

3.Make sure it is SNUG!

4.Safety seats are not “BABY

   SEATS”!

5.You can SEE BETTER from a

   safety seat!

6. Air bags can be DANGEROUS

to children under 12.  Ride in a

    REAR SEAT!

7. Anyone under 17 has to wear a

safety belt no matter where they

    sit in a car.
