Expectations

Here is a list of things you can check out as the year goes by!  Many of these things will become very natural for your child this year!  Many of these things will help your child BE successful and FEEL successful here in Kindergarten and in their life years ahead! 

Language Arts 

             Listen and engage actively in a variety of oral language experiences 

    Listen and speak in order to gain knowledge  

Speak appropriately for a variety of different audiences and occasions   

 Clearly communicate by putting their thoughts into spoken words     

Demonstrate mastery of concepts of print    

Demonstrate understanding that language is formed from a sequence of sounds  

Use letter and sound knowledge to decode words    

Develop an extensive vocabulary     

Use different reading strategies to comprehend text read aloud   

Respond to a variety of texts    

Generate questions about topics that are introduced through read aloud and other sources   

Read and listen to increase knowledge of his/her culture and the culture of others   

  Develop the foundations of writing    

 Compose original text  

Use writing as a tool for learning

Mathematics

 Use numbers to name quantities

Describe order of events or objects  

Model addition and subtraction by the use of manipulative
