Frequently Asked Questions

What time does school begin/end?
The first bell rings at 7:50 -- that's when students can go to class (before 7:50, students wait in the cafeteria).  The tardy bell rings at 8:00.  School is over at 3:00, but Kindergarteners dismiss a little early to give them time to get where they need to go.

What about breakfast?
We serve breakfast to every child every morning in the classroom.

What are "reading minutes"?
At Carver, we ask that all students read for 60 minutes each week.  For most Kindergarteners, those 60 minutes will be met by having a parent or other adult (or older sibling) reading to them.  By the middle of the year, however, some portion of those minutes should be the child reading to the adult.

When your child is ready to start reading, I will send home books in the daily folder.  Please have your child read the book to you, and then send it back in the folder so that I can send another new book.  The only exception is Fridays.  I won't send any books home on Fridays.

Please write down your child's reading minutes in the daily folder each day.  On Fridays, we will total the minutes and our goal is for the entire class to read all of their minutes every week.

What special classes will my child have?
Students go to PE, Art, Music, Computer, and Library each week.

How does the Library check-out work?
We check out books as a class on Wednesdays.  Please make sure that your child has his/her book in the backpack Tuesday night.  I will help to remind them to look in their backpacks for their library books.  If a child asks to go to the library to get a new book in between library visits, I will send them at the end of the day as we have time.

What is the best way to reach Mrs. Nolen?
I check the children's daily folders every day.  A note in the folder is sure to reach me.  I also check my e-mail daily, but not always before the children leave for the day.  I respond to voicemail as soon as possible, but once again, not always before the children leave.  If you need to change your child's transportation in the middle of the day, it is best to call the office (943-5070).

Can I help in the classroom?
YES!  I am always ready for parent volunteers.  Just let me know how you would like to help!
