COOPER COUGAR READING CHALLENGE
September13, 2007
Dear Parents,
We are beginning a school-wide reading challenge program at Cooper Elementary. Research has
shown that the best way to improve reading skills is to READ more! Please
help your child meet the reading challenge by reading a total of at least 60
minutes a week at home. This time may be divided into four 15-minute
sessions, three 20-minute sessions, or any way that works well for your
family, or is specified by your child's teacher. You may read aloud to your child, or you may have your child
read independently. Some children enjoy taking turns reading aloud with a
parent. After each reading session, encourage your child to fill out the
reading log by writing the title of the book and the minutes read on the
line beside the correct day of the week. At the end of the week please sign
the form if your child has read 60 minutes. Reading logs will be sent home
each Tuesday in the Take Home Folders and should be returned to school the
following Tuesday.
The students will receive a
reward based on the number of reading logs turned in at the end of each
nine week grading period. We are planning four
Read-a-thons and grade level Literacy Nights during the year to celebrate
reading, so make sure to watch your calendars.
We hope that the Cooper Cougar Reading
Challenge will provide many enjoyable reading experiences for you and your
child. If you have any questions, please call The Learning Center at
extension 6607.
Sincerely,
Beth Foss
