Graduation Requirements :: Scholarship & Loan Programs
The
Texas Legislature has created loan and scholarship programs for high school
students who complete the recommended or distinguished program in high school.

TEXAS Scholarships
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board establishes rules and administers these programs that enable students in economic need to receive the TEXAS scholarships, which enable low-income students who have completed either the recommended or distinguished achievement graduation program to attend college. Scholarship awards are established at the average statewide amount of tuition and required fees of a state four-year institution, a technical institute, or a community college, depending on what type of institution a student intends to attend. Students must enroll in at least three-quarters of a full course load for an undergraduate student and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The Coordinating Board also was to establishes rules allowing persons to take less than a three-quarter load based on hardship. Texas Grants
Texas Grants are available to students who complete the recommended
or distinguished program in high school and are eligible on the basis of financial
need may apply for the Texas Grant program. The award amount depends on the
tuition and fees to be paid by the student. In general, it is an amount equal
to the student's tuition and required fees at public institutions. For more

Teach for Texas Grants
The Teach for Texas Grants are available to persons who have
a TEXAS grant as well as for those who meet all of the requirements of the
TEXAS grant except the financial aid requirements of that program. These grants
are designed to attract persons to the teaching profession in specific need
areas or to areas of the state in need of teachers. Persons who receive the
Teach for Texas Grants receive double the amount of funding allocated to TEXAS
grantees, but must also agree to teach for not less than five years in an
area designated as a critical need field or in a community experiencing a
critical teacher shortage. The entire amount of the grant is waived if the
person fulfills this teaching requirement. Teach for Texas grants also are
available for individuals seeking alternative certification. For more

Texas B-On-Time Loan Program
The 78th Texas Legislature established the Texas B-On-Time Loan Program beginning in January 2004. The eligibility requirements are similar to the Texas Grant program and allow students who graduate under the recommended/distinguished curriculum to be eligible for no-interest loan to attend colleges and universities in Texas. If the student graduates with a 3.0 GPA within a specified amount of time the loan can be forgiven upon graduation. For more information, see the Texas B-On-Time Loan Fact Sheet.
