General Lesson Plans 3rd 9 weeks                       

Warm up: Gourmet Curriculum/TAKS passage/Bellringer

Daily journal entry related to novel

Class novels: 6th grade: Roll of Thunder    7th:  Search for the Shadowman     8th:  The Outsiders

ACTION magazine-short and fun human interest readings from real life events and people; We occasionally perform plays featured in this bimonthly magazine. These stories are used to teach and reinforce reading and writing skills to students who demonstrate below level abilities in Language Arts.

Homework Reading Logs: all students will be expected to keep up with a weekly reading log which is handed out on Friday and to be turned in the following Friday. This is worth 2 homework grades.

*REWARDS---6th graders will learn a new strategy for reading multisyllable words using REWARDS program. This workbook will be kept in the classroom.  7th graders will finish the complete program this 9 weeks and will continue with strategy practice occasionally.

CEI lab--8th graders are in the computer lab daily working on a reading/vocabulary proggram called CEI. There is close monitoring as each student works at his/her pace.

Story Form--this program utilizes short stories to analyze text and teach the concepts of setting, character, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action;

SSR-Sustained Silent Reading/Partner Reading/Some students will participate in this by visiting a regular ed. classroom during this time. Please carve out some time at home to read with your child as often as possible.

**REWARDS: (Reading Excellence:  Word Attack and Rate Development Strategies)  This flexible reading program is designed for secondary students and gives them a strategy for decoding multisyllabic words.  It is research-supported. Students keep their workbooks in class, but may take them home to practice word parts and vowel combinations, as well as reading  multi-syllable words.

Overt strategy:  1. Circle the word parts (prefixes) at the beginning of the word. 2. Circle the word parts (suffixes) at the end  of the word. 3. Underline the letters representing vowel sounds in the rest of the word. 4. Say the parts of the word. 5. Say the parts fast. 6. Make it a real word.   EXAMPLE:  (re)(con)struc(tion)

Covert strategy: 1. Look for word parts at the beginning and end of the word, and look for vowel sounds in the rest of the word. 2. Say the parts of t he word. 3. Say the parts fast. 4. Make it a real word.
