Why were Historical Kings important in Africa?
They maintained the balance of the village. They make sure everyone follows the rules and pays taxes. They also are in charge of trade in their village and their trading post. They made sure the village was perfect. They made sure there weren't to many people slacking off or not doing work. If there was not a king people probably wouldn't know about respect and how to act in Africa. Even though there were harsh punishments for the littlest of things, their kings made all the more difference.

How did the Historical Kings gain and maintain power?
By how many slaves or how many wives a king had was a sign of power. They also gained power by the greatness of their trading post. They made their people fear them so they will not try anything foolish. They would hold many great and not so great events or ceremonies that honored him or was slaying a traitor/criminal from their village. Everyone showed respect to him to make sure he knew he was honored and who was in charge.

What was the European reaction to these kingdoms?
They started to trade with them and got new types of materials and food. One major trade possession to the African's was salt. They used salt when preserving meat, cooking and in many other things. Sometimes salt was more precious than gold to them. They traded a lot for this good salt. They started to build kingdoms on the coast of Africa. They enjoyed this new land called Africa.
