Lesson Cycle
In 6th Grade Social Studies, we
follow a 4-6 day lesson cycle which typically consists of:
 | Investigation
 | This phase consists of
information gathering. This may include research,
note-taking, viewing PowerPoint slide shows, viewing a video, or
reading excerpts from a book or other resource. |
|
 | Synthesis
 | This phase involves the
ordering of the information gathered in the investigation phase.
This may include the creation of graphic organizers, Thinking
Maps, or other activities that help organize the information. |
|
 | Application
 | This phase requires the proper
use of the knowledge. It includes, but is not limited to,
formal assessments such as tests and projects, GeoJournal
assignments, and informal assessments made by the teacher. |
|
GeoJournal
The primary tool for 6th Grade
Social Studies students is the GeoJournal--a composition book that
comprises an ongoing portfolio of students' work throughout the school
year. GeoJournal assignments are designed to address different
learning styles and to allow students to make choices regarding the
presentation of their work. An example is pictured below:

Because of the importance of this document to each student's grade,
GeoJournals are to remain on campus at all times.
