Project Overview
Unit: Europe
Lesson: Europe Project
Objectives: Students will gain an understanding of the role of governments, the limitations of different forms of government, the making of laws, and experience the relationship between economics and military and political power.
Materials:
1. Handouts
a. Assignment explained with grading rubric.
b. Group product sheets (for earning tokens). Group product sheets will consist of worksheets and activities relating to the subject area being studied.
2. Token Economy
a. Accounting sheet w/ up to date balance.
b. Glass marbles/beads for armies
c. Tokens must be surrendered for food and supplies each day.
3. Military Supplies (Based on Risk armies and game)
a. Three tokens for one army.
b. Dice for waging war (3 red, 2 white).
c. Conquered countries surrender all tokens and armies they had when they fell.
d. Conquered countries must pay tribute of 3 tokens each day.
e. Index cards (known as “battle cards”).
Lesson Plan: Each table forms their own country.
1. A name is assigned for your country.
2. Create a government. (Determined by lot)
a. Autocracy (dictator chosen by lot—makes all decisions for group).
b. Democracy (all members vote on all decisions).
3. Make a code of laws for your group. This is your rules and procedures for working together as a group.
4. Divide group responsibilities.
a. Group leader.
b. Finance minister (handles the tokens and accounting).
c. General (in charge of the armies and all military decisions in war).
d. Citizen (in charge of product sheets and all supplies; turns in assignments).
5. Economies: money system for trade
a. Students may “sell” (turn-in) work to earn tokens for their country.
i. earn 3 tokens for each daily grade turned in.
ii. earn 10 tokens (or more, depending on product) for each product turned in.
iii. cannot collect daily grade tokens until all members of group have turned in the assignment.
b. Each country begins with a minimum amount of tokens (20). Each additional token must be earned.
c. Each country must pay 1 token a day for food and supplies.
d. Money system is accounted for on paper only--no tokens are physically handed over.
6. Waging war (use Risk rules)
a. Armies cost 3 tokens each.
b. “war” consists of the roll of dice
c. Conquered countries must surrender their entire treasury and all armies.
d. Conquered countries must pay a daily tribute of 3 tokens to the conquering country until they are “liberated.”
e. Conquered countries may be liberated if they:
i. defeat their conquerors in war (revolution), or
ii. form a secret alliance with another country to attack their conqueror and “liberate” them (may combine all armies from allied countries).
