The Challenges of Forming a Government: Students were
'stranded' on a deserted island. They had to select a name for
their island, adopt a flag, assign jobs, and write a code of laws.
It was not an easy task.
First Period started calmly working together.
There was much discussion over who would be in charge.
No one seemed to agree on much of anything.
This gave way to some lively discussion.
Some compromise was made.
Everyone began lining up to vote for a leader.
The balloting was not-so-secret, which would lead to
trouble.
The next task was to assign jobs.
Not everyone was pleased.
Eventually, an opposition group arose to challenge the
leadership.
Others set to work designing a flag.
The opposition group began to gather some strength.
The leadership struggled to accomplish the task.
The leaders met with the opposition and the revolt was
prevented.
2nd period never seemed to get anything going.
Agreement on any issue was difficult.
Everyone sort of splintered apart and worked
individually.
There were many aspiring leaders in 5th period.
Though chaotic at times, leaders were chosen by vote.
Jobs were calmly assigned.
Tough decisions were discussed.
Differing viewpoints were aired.
Finally votes were taken.

Geography Terms
Students spent some time posing as landforms. They had to
interview other students in order to "discover" their own identity.
"How do you pronounce isthmus?"
"It's a chain or group of
islands!"
"What's a tributary?"
"Am I a water feature?"

Students worked together to locate places using latitude and longitude,
while competing against other groups.
